Doctors Are Interested in Learning About Meditation for Personal and Clinical Use

A more recent formal survey by Cohen et al in 2005 sent to a random sample of 2000 Australian doctors about the status of meditation found that;

  • 82% regarded meditation as moderately or highly effective with low risk for harm whereas only 3% regarded it as occasionally or frequently harmful,
  • 23% were either self taught or had only attended an introductory workshop on meditation whereas 3% had formal training such as part of a certificate, diploma or degree,
  • 56% would like to receive some form of training while 11% have already done so in the past 12 months for personal use
  • 40% either have in the past 12 months or would consider using it in their practice,
  • If the topic of meditation is raised by a patient, 65% of doctors would actively encourage them to pursue it
  • 9% of doctors suggested it in the course of their practice at least once per week or more often, whereas 56% have suggested it at least once per month
